⏰ NO TIME

Sorry kids, I only had time for one segment this week (it's about Bitcoin, lol)

⏰ NO TIME

This week was undefined 😶‍🌫️. I am so sorry — I said yes to a touch too much client work, so I had to prioritise that. As a result only had time to write one tiny story.

But you can help with this: If you can afford it, consider paying £4 a month, or buy a whole year for a discount at £40. Or just share your favourite Horrific/Terrific post with a friend and get them to sign up!

Thank you for all your continued support! Enjoy this weeks very very liddle post:

☀️ A bitcoin mining company has 'partnered' with Navajo Nation

Navajo Nation is a Native American territory that spans New Mexico and Arizona, and Utah. It gets a lot of sun. Which is why it's the perfect place to harness the power of solar energy so that you can provide people with electricity mine bitcoin.

Yep, that's right. WestBlock Capital are able to mine 23-25 bitcoin a month using cheap, reliable, solar energy. They're doing this to bring economic prosperity to Navajo Nation.

Hahaha, of course that's not true. They're doing it to get rich. Here are some sunny facts:

  • 32% of Navajo citizens don't have electricity
  • The bitcoin mine consumes 7 megawatts of power a month... which is enough to power 19,600 homes
  • 23-25 bitcoin = $1.4 to $1.6 million

Navajo Nation's story of being shat on by white people is a classic one: they have a lot resources (e.g. sun, or unsold energy stored in old coal mines somehow), but they are not allowed to use it, even though they need it.

Why is this allowed? Oh yeah, the people of Navajo Nation don't own their own land so there's literally nothing they can do about it, except sit there and continue to be colonised by greedy crypto bros.

🧑‍🏫 The lesson here: I guess solar power is really reliable for a large scale bitcoin mining operation. Maybe ONE DAY we'll get to see how well it works on something we actually need, like providing basic utilities to people's homes.

That is all I had time for this week, but if you're still hungry why not open the door to the past and re-experience some of these absolute smash-hits:

Zero Click: in this one I explain that whole Pegasus thing, and also say this about Jeff Bezos: "His optimism sickens me. Humans are terrible and everyone on Earth is miserable. But fine! Go and colonise space!"

Bitcoin Day: when El Salvador made Bitcoin into legal tender, and forced a rubbish app onto citizens: "Now that everyone can finally get the app, there are still some pretty pressing problems deliberate features designed to shit on the poor".

Award Bias: Where I first learned about the metaverse via the Winklevoss. Key quote: "The twins are obsessed with the idea that blockchain will save us all — and therefore they should both die in a fiery pit — and say that what we're looking at now is the start of the 'metaverse' where everything is a digital asset."

30% Epic: where I said this, for some reason: "I hate Calibri and it's self-important 'I'm too pretty to be Arial but too ugly to be anything but a default font' type attitude. My suggestion for a replacement: Slapyrus. It's like Papyrus, but it fuckin SLAPS."

Goodbye, have a great weekend. Oh, what will I be doing? Editing a 30-page document about the harms perpetuated by Big Tech, hahahahaha... ha? 🥲
